SSCES 2023 KLCC

Took public transport (MRT) to attend the Smart & Sustainable Cities Engineering Symposium (SSCES 2023) organized by The Institution of Engineers, Malaysia on 9th Sept, 2023.

It was a bright Saturday morning downtown.

Was told in the symposium that KLCC Convention Center is 100% renewable energy powered.

Smart & Sustainability Cities Engineering Symposium (SSCES 2023)

On Affordable Housing and Transit-Oriented Development (TOD)

As presented by Metro Kajang Holdings (MKH):

Is Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) the solution for affordable housing?

Green Funding

Public-Private-Partnership model.

Moody’s report on Digital Transformation through AI and DLT could be a good reference in terms of innovative financing for smart city development.

Comment

  1. Both the public and private sector work in silos. There is a communication gap.
  2. While everyone is busy to secure their self-interest or simply to stay afloat, there are still ongoing efforts to make things better.
  3. We have quite a number of blueprints top down, yet too few are aware and follow.
  4. We have yet to reach the point of no return when it comes to sustainability, for example from global warming to global boiling.
  5. Incentivization could be the solution as one way to encourage participation.
  6. Stakeholder engagement can lead to participatory governance. Citizen-centric smart city development should be the way to go.
  7. Technology is the enabler. People, process, technology.

Summary

Through this symposium, I found similarities in ideas between what had been presented and what has been written in the book Global Goals: Every Achievement Counts.

There has never been a problem with the resources, the problems lie within distribution.

A citizen-centric, smart, and sustainable city that is resilient should be:

  • Socially inclusive,
  • Economically sound, and
  • Environmentally friendly.
ABCDE The World from Koh How Tze

ABCDE the World is the way to go.

  • AI
  • Blockchain
  • Connectivity
  • Data
  • Ethics

Special thanks to Dr. Lim Seng Boon for the invitation to this meaningful event.

P/S: Another long day for the week, yet a Saturday well spent.

It is always important to have people in mind in any development.
